Not likely...: It's not uncommon to feel a beating sensation, especially if you are thin. Your age and lack of other conditions that predispose make this less likely. If you continue to have issues then you should get a checkup for this. It will at least make you less worried.

Could be : Abdominal aortic aneurysm would be very unusual in a 22 year-old. It is also not uncommon to palpate a normal abdominal aorta if the patient is thin.

Good Question: The largest abdominal aneurysm I have operated on was 16 CM in diameter.  It is unusual these days to find really large diameter aneuryms due to better screening & due to the number found incidentally when exams such as sonograms or ct scans are performed for other reasons.  Increasing size correlates with increased rupture rates.

AAA: An AAA refers to an abdominal aortic aneurysm.  Imaging of the aneurysm provides information needed to decide whether it merits surgery and if surgery is feasible.  Vascular surgeons are the experts who provide the guidance one needs in making decisions regarding such aneurysms.  When surgery is too risky, an endovascular stent can sometimes be inserted within the aneurysm to prevent its rupture.

Aneurysm: I would not recommend any activity that could cause significant physical or psychological stress. What you describe has the potential for both.

See below: An ultrasound will detect most abdominal aortic aneurysms if it's technically good (i.e. no overlying bowel gas). The radiologist will generally comment on the quality of the study. An echocardiogram can generally detect a thoracic aortic aneurysm. A CT angiogram can reliably detect either but there is a radiation dose. A non-contrast MRI isn't the test of choice.

doctors, could a barium swallow detect an aortic aneurism?

No, but...: Many things are possible in life, so one "could" sort of detect such a problem, but the thing being detected is merely a large object pushing the esophagus or stomach out of position. Since barium stays in the esophagus or stomach (unless there is a leak) there is not a way to see the aorta... unless the aorta has calcium that reveals its shape, or some other unusual revealing components on x-ray.
