AAA: An AAA refers to an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Imaging of the aneurysm provides information needed to decide whether it merits surgery and if surgery is feasible. Vascular surgeons are the experts who provide the guidance one needs in making decisions regarding such aneurysms. When surgery is too risky, an endovascular stent can sometimes be inserted within the aneurysm to prevent its rupture.

Other factors: Surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm is based on size (>5cm), location (below the renal arteries), and symptoms. If your father's aneurysm is less than 5cm, and he has no symptoms, observation and medical therapy is warranted. Small aneurysms are not helped by surgical intervention, since the chance of spontaneous rupture is very low.
