i have large taste buds on the back of my tongue and they really hurt but why are your taste buds bigger in the back then they are in the front?

Accepted Answer

Bigger: There is a row of larger size taste buds along the back of your tongue.  Anatomically that's normal.  But you shouldn't even know that they are there.  The fact that they hurt is worrisome, see your Dentist.

when cleaning tongue this morning i noticed that  my taste buds all the way on the back of my tongue were very large. there pretty much painless .

Normally not a prob: Enlarged taste buds are normally not a problem, but attempt to figure out when it occurred.  The enlargement can be due to meds, supplements, spicy or sour foods, illness.  I would contact an oral surgeon, ENT doctor or dentist if in doubt or there is an increase in discomfort.

Normal: They are the papillae of the tongue. Likely you are noticing the filiform and vallate (circumvallate) papillae. Involved in taste. Normal -- not to worry. Test them out with some sweet, sour, bitter, and salty options. Good Luck.

Taste buds come &amp; go: Taste buds regenerate more quickly than bad politicians taking new positions after the public supposedly "squares everything we play.  They should come back.

i accidentally used detol has mouth wash.  the taste buds in my tongue are not working. i also have a metal type battery taste. will it come back?

Altered taste sense: Lots of things can cause a change in taste sensation due to damage to the taste buds. Your taste sensation should return to normal over the next few days as the taste buds heal. If not, see your doctor.

Cold symptoms: Many of your symptoms may be from your cold.  What is a while?  If your symptoms are not resolving seeing your doctor will determine what is going on.

Food Allergy: Occasionally food allergies can cause tingling of the tongue, and swelling of taste buds.  It might be nothing and just cause occasional aphthous ulcers; however, it might be a good idea to keep a diary of what you are when that happens, or perhaps talk to an allergist, as some allergies can become life threatening!

Probably normal: Everybody has a row of 7-10 prominent bumps on the back of the tongue, called circumvallate papillae. Google it; lots of photos are available.
