Constipation: Try increasing your water intake. Also eat more salads and veggies. This should help you with having softer stools that are easier to pass. You can try a stool softener if necessary. I like mineral oil to soften stools. It will help you pass stools without the " blowout effect" of many harsher stool softeners. You can take 2 tablespoons daily with juice for soft stools.

Q: i am big-boned as a teenager. does that mean i will be fat like my mom?

Not necessarily: Big boned does not have to equal to fat. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise and watch your weight.

Most : Most girls have a growth spurt between the ages of 10 to 14 years old. This is a time of growth as well as the development that comes with puberty. Your daughter may require extra calories. If she is physically active she will be burning calories faster. You can check with your doctor to see if she is in the normal weight range for a girl of her height. What is important is that she eats healthy and well balanced meals, hydrates well with water and remains physically active. One possible drawback to eating large amounts is that it can become a habit. As she gets older or if she becomes more sedentary, her caloric needs can decrease. If that happened and she continued to have a high food intake (especially if we are talking junk food); then she could experience an unhealthy weight gain.

Hydrate well.: Stay well hydrated (at least 8 - 8 ounces glasses of water per /day). Try to get in 5 servings of vegetables ; 4 servings of fruit per day. Stay physically active w regular exercise. There are a number of over the counter laxatives that can be taken orally to help pass retained fecal matter. Please discuss your hemorrhoids w your physician. If this is not sufficient. Disimpaction is sometimes.

You also have to consider various malabsorption syndromes. If your own doc feels uncomfortable doing the work up then go to a good gastroenterologist .

See regular Dr 1st: Most stooling issues can be handled by your regular doctor. A dietary history, stooling history & review of issues can often point the way to a simple DX and plan for improvement.If the initial workup or rx is not helpful, additional eval thru a GI specialist may be necessary. In my local, the gi's won't see kids <18, so a 50-100 mile trip to a pedi GI is an extra burden.
