Ophthalmologist: Flor these symptoms you need to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.  These suggest the likelihood of a retinal detachment, a serious problem which can lead to blindness quickly if not detected and treated.  Do not delay.

based on your experience as a retina surgeon, i have had macular pucker on 1 eye for 9 years, vision now 20/50, see wavy lines on doorways, etc. & objects larger, how likely is it that vision & distortion will improve if i have vitrectomy?

Accepted Answer

: Vitrectomy with membrane peeling is very likely to be helpful at resolving the distortion (metamorphopsia). In general you can expect a 50% reduction in the distortion. There is also around a 2-3% chance of a serious complication, so go forward if you're having difficulty with daily activities and defer surgery if it's only a minor annoyance.

May be a problem: Bending of visualized objects, or metamorphopsia, suggests a potential retinal problem.The center of the retina, or macula, should be checked.

Depends: Seeing a constant shadow around objects may just be an out of focus eye needing a refraction (glasses) or something more serious affecting the cornea, lens, retina or other.  An eye exam will help sort out.

Vitreous floaters: What you describe may be a new object floating in the fluid in the back of your eye.  It is important for you to get your eyes looked at to be sue you are not developing a retinal tear or detachment.

Need an eye exam: The only way to find the cause of this is to have your eyes examined, the vision may be corrected by glasses.

Jerk nystagmus : The four most frequent identifiable causes of downbeat nystagmus are cervico-medullary junction anomalies (Chiari malformation), cerebellar degenerations, multiple sclerosis, and vertebrobasilar infarction.  Medications and alcohol are other relatively common causes.  Uncommon causes include B12 deficiency and familial. An MRI should be done if you have not had one yet. Treatment is dalfampridine.

Normal: You are converging your eyes to look at a close object so it changes the alignment of the distance things in your vision and vice versa.  It happens to everyone but few people notice it.  As long as the object that you are looking at is not double, it's ok.

there's a part of my vision that slightly bends light. i can see perfectly through it and not notice anything unusual. its when i turn my head side to side, i notice that a certain part of my vision is causing objects to bend a little. keratoconus?

: Could be and easy to diagnose. Have someone who knows how measure your corneal shape and depth  and  you will know.
