Oophorectomy means to remove an ovary. Postmenopausal refers to a women who has stopped menstruating, and has left their reproductive years.

No change : As long as your other ovary is functioning normal you should not see any difference in your menstrual cycles. The other ovary will produce all of the normal hormone levels.

YES: Laparoscopic surgery is less traumatic to you so you will be able to get back to aggressive activities sooner than with traditional open surgery.  Your surgeon should give you guidelines about when you can resume aggressive activities.

Your period: This is your period. Estrogen stopped when you lost your ovaries.  This is same as if stopping active pills of birth control and now taking placebo.

i had a laparoscopic unilateral oophorectomy 2 weeks ago. is it normal to still feel pain w pain medications? not the incisions, but inside where the ovary used to be? pain is achy, sometimes pulsating.

Post-op pain: is normal; however, I suggest notifying your GYN.

i have a 'solid' 3.1 x 2.2 cm cyst on my left ovary. my doctor recommended a laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy. is this the correct recommendation?

YES: This is an appropriate recommendation. Once he looks at the cyst he may be able to save the ovary and take only the cyst, but it is best to plan for removal of the ovary.  He could also find things that require more than removal of the ovary & tube.  That is not so common and hopefully you won't have that experience.  Good luck.

Call your doctor: You should expect some bleeding post procedure but when in doubt let your doctor know.  We rather be bothered with routine issues than not be notified with something more serious is happening.  So call your doctor asap.

Ask your surgeon: It shouldn't be too long a time, but each surgeon will have her/his own recommendations. Good luck.
