There : There is a possibilty that the abscess you are dealing with is not sensitive to septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). If you have not noticed an improvement after about 3 days, then it's likely you will need a different antibiotic, and/or a I&D (incision and drainage). A boil/abscess is an infection directly beneath the skin, and should be of no concern regarding it's location, however if left untreated it can cause an infection in the blood and this is a serious situation that can be life threatening.

Depends: Depends on what kind of work you do, where it was lanced, how large it was, and if there were any complications or surrounding infection. Some i send the next day, some weeks later.

Depends: It depends how deep the abscess is and if it is loci later or not. The wiser coarse is to see your doc and follow your symptoms to make sure that your infection does not recur.

Ok: As long as the drainage stops, don't worry about the packing.  If you do not get healing by the end of 6 weeks or pus reforms again in the lesion, contact the doctor again.

See a doctor !! : You need to have the abscess evaluated again. Also might need oral antibiotics and the packing to be changed. I always insist on getting evaluated by a physician instead of a PA or NP.

Yes: An abscess is accompanied by inflammation. The drainage removes fluid (pus) associated with an infection, but the inflammation remains for a while after the drainage procedure. In fact, the drainage can cause more inflammation.
Pain is a typical sign/symptom of inflammation. 
It should subside in a short time.

i just had an abscess lanced at the emergency room, but my face is even more swollen and red and the abscess is still there. is this normal?

Yes &amp; No: The swelling (=induration) around site will remain for hours. If the incision closed/scabbed over, the pus can reaccumulate and require drainage again. You should have instructions to clean site/keep open so it will drain completely. Warm compresses to area can help. Should also have recheck appt--if it worsens, will need rechecked.

i had an abscess lanced 2 days ago near my groin area. it doesn't hurt much but it's still draining like crazy. i was told to remove the packing?

Wound care: It's true that you don't want to leave packing in place for too long-it will start to smell and become really grungy, so it must be changed. If it's already been 2 days, it REALLY needs to be changed now, particularly if it's foul. I hope they gave you some gauze or something to replace the packing with. Otherwise I would call right away for proper wound management. You don't want to neglect it.

how long does it take for an abscess to heal after being lanced?

3-5 days: It will usually gradually inprove over 3-5 days.  If the opening closes before the pus has fully drained it may recur and start getting worse again.  If there is significant inflammation around the abscess(cellulitis), antibiotics are usually needed.
