Smaller frequent mea: The present advice for GERD is to eat frequent small meals and avoid acid containing foods like citrus juices and lemonade etc. If you are lactose intolerant,you can try  soy mik.

Right rib cage: The gall bladder, liver and some intestines are located just below the right lower ribs. Your physician can examine you and then order a right upper quadrant ultrasound and any other tests that he/she deems appropriate. In the meantime avoid fried and fatty foods.

Milk protein Allergy: If the reflux is triggered by both lactose containing and lactose free milk, then you may have milk protein allergy. An allergic reaction releases histamine. Histamine in the stomach will increase acid production and cause stomach contractions which will push the acid up the esophagus.   Try avoiding cows milk products and see if it helps.

i get acid reflux almost always (felt in lower neck) after eating all bran cereal. i use 2%, lactaid (lactose free) milk. is it the bran or the milk?

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.  Your reflux may not be from bran or milk but be a functional situation.

No: Lactate in the blood is an acid, not a sugar. It does not become food for bacteria in your gut. It will not cause symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Possibly: My understanding is these pills contain lactase a brush border enzyme which  breaks down the sugar in the milk to simpler sugars which aids in the absorption of these sugars .This enzyme is missing in most patients with lactose intolerance and  if it supplemented in the form of a pill ,it may work!

Avoidance: Lactose intolerance is a permanent condition. The treatment involves avoiding lactose  products and/or using an enzyme replacement. There are products which are lactose-free; dairy free may not be free of lactose. A helpful trick is to buy products from the kosher section which are non-dairy as these will be also lactose free.
