None: Despite the fact that many obstetricians use medications like terbutaline, magnesium sulfate, and Nifedipine to prevent early labor from progressing, many studies show that they are not very effective....And, for active labor, there are no known medications, at this time, to stop progression.

No: Women have been looking for ways to induce labor for centuries.  By "term"  40 weeks of pregnancy, most women are quite ready to go into labor, but there really isn't any known or safe way to induce labor using over the counter drugs.  Babies typically come when they are ready to come.  If there are medical problems that suggest that delivery should occur, there are specific medical treatments.

These are not in the barbituate or benzodiazepine families and would not show up on a drug test as such.  Sometimes mothers are given a pain killer prior to the epidural which might show up on a drug test as an opioid, but that would have been documented in the medical record.  If you have questions about the testing and whether any prescribed medications could have shown up as barbituates or benzodiazepines in the drug screening, you should call your ob/gyne doctor.

No, : No, there are not typically barbiturates or benzodiazepines in an epidural.  Sometimes medications are administered through an IV at the time of an epidural, and those should be recorded in the medical record and available for review.

These are not in the barbituate or benzodiazepine families and would not show up on a drug test as such. Sometimes mothers are given a pain killer (narcotic) prior to or in the epidural which might show up on a drug test as an opioid, but that will be documented in the medical record.  There are other medications that could have been given to you in the benzodiazepine or barbituate classes for various reasons, so the best thing to do is ask!  if you have specific questions about the testing and whether any other prescribed medications could have shown up as barbituates or benzodiazepines in the drug screening, you should call your ob/gyne doctor.

It depends...: Fentanyl, remifentanyl, nitrous, Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) are just a fee of the medications given intravenously by the rn's during labor. Self medication during labor is usually discouraged. As far as getting medications in the back (epidural), it is mostly local anesthetics that are not narcotics.

Ativan (lorazepam): Ativan (lorazepam) is a fairly short-acting benzodiazepine with no metabolites.  It can be given IV if needed.  If you're very concerned about panic attacks and anxiety, you should be in treatment before labor -- and some of the breathing you do for labor, could be helpful for calming anxiety as well.  Having someone you trust there to coach you and be present with you may also help calm anxiety.
