Stop!: Diovan (valsartan) has a black box warning (unsafe!) that requires it to be stopped immediately as soon as pregnancy is detected. You can start the new medicine in 24-48 hours. Please be aware that labetolol is class c (possibly unsafe) for pregnancy but probably safe for lactation. A similar drug, sectral (aceutolol) is class b (safer) for pregnancy but probably unsafe for lactation.

Beta blocker: This is a blood pressure medication in the class called beta blockers which has effect not only on the beta receptors which can result i lower blood pressure and heart rate but also cross over to the Alpha receptors which can lead to even further blood pressure lowering.

Drug choices: Both losartan (l) and valsartan (v) are drug of the angiotensin receptor blocker  class. Perhaps you were switched due to your BP was not controlled on the dose of the l you were on. Both have few side effects and reduce BP and proteinuria quite well. L should be given twice a day and v can be given once daily for maximum their maximum effect. Check with your physician for her thoughts.

ACE I vs ARB: High BP  medicines, like antibiotics work at various points in a series of events, much like the links of a chain; Diovan (valsartan) is in the class of medicines called "arb's" and works later in the hi BP chain. Lisinopril (an  ace i) works earlier in the chain  of events that cause high blood pressure the mg.Numbers" you gave are quite comparable.  Arb's like Diovan (valsartan) have fewer side effects than ace i's.
