1000-3000 mg/day: There have been only a few studies on this. They do show that l-lysine is highly effective for preventing cold sores. Some studies used doses of 1000 mg 3x/day while others used as little as 1000 mg/day. I usually advise 1500 mg/day. If you still get cold sores try raising the dose- lysine is quite safe.

Amino acid: it is an amino acid ( body protein) and is not harmful-better off using topical cold sore medical and oral zince tablets.

Lysine and  nursing: Lysine is an essential amino acid(protein) meaning our body cannot make it. It is part of our diet.We eat 60,000 mg  protein a day. For prophylaxis usually one takes 500-1000 mg a day and for an acute flare I have seen 1500 to 3000 mg/day given for 2-5  days.  It may at very high doses interact with arginine another amino acid( but we  have to have both in our diet, anyway) . Discuss with doc

Herpes: Cold sores are herpes.  It is recommended that you use Acyclovir for this.  I favor Valtrex (valacyclovir).  @ grams twice a day for 1 day is the recommended treatment.  While lysine s supplements won't hurt, its not really going to help either.

Lysine for Cold Sore: Yes.  Simply yes.  But, if the sore re-occurs frequently one may need a true anti-viral medication to treat this such as Acyclovir or valacyclovir.

I would advise you to see a health care provider who is aware of the tremendous changes in the understanding and treatment of herpes that have occurred in the past few years.

Everything we knew about herpes seems to have changed in the recent years.

Stress: Stress levels increasing often can precipate outbreaks of herpetic lesions.  If these outbreaks started around the same time as some new stress in your life, then they may be due to the stress hormones in your body suppressing your immune system.

Why lysine?: Lysine is not a recognized treatment for herpes. There are home remedies and prescription treatments that may provide better results. It would be prudent to consult your doctor for an evaluation and see this site for more info.

i get hsv1 cold sores, but still want to eat some argenine rich food. if i ate rice could i counterbalance it by eating lysine rich foods like yogurt?

Irrelevant: There no cure for HSV infection and often stress is an aggravating factor, but not food. Cold sores generally clear up without treatment within 10-14 days. Good luck
