See your doctor...: You may have sprained, or tore a tendon or ligament. Beyond analgesics, rest, ice, compression, & elevation  it is necessary to consult a physician (orthopedic) for a complete evaluation of your knee. You may need imaging studes to fully diagnose the problem.

Appropriate recovery: If you sprained your knee playing basketball, you should rest the knee joint and avoid sport participation presently. Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications as well as stretching and strengthening of muscle groups around the knee joint are all sensible steps to recover. You do not necessarily need rehab. You do however need full recovery before returning to sport play. Seek advice if worried.

i am concerned that you can't fully bend or extend your knee
you may have fractured your knee cap or torn your patellar (or less likely) your quad tendon.

To clarify, can you fully extend or flex? Does pain limit the flex/ext? Or is flex/ext not possible in any circumstance?

Other considerations include torn, unstable meniscus and ligament tear.

I recommend evaluation by a local orthopaedic surgeon at your earliest convenience.

Joint effusion: If you have a swollen painful knee after basketball, then you should not be playing basketball, and find out what is the damage inside your knee that is causing fluid to build up inside the joint. See an orthopedic surgeon. Protect that joint. You need it to walk for the next many years.

Need rest: "jumpers knee" or patellar tendon tendinitis is aggravated by stop/ start, acceleration sports and jumping. So basketball is especially 'bad' on jumper's knee. Rest from bb, nsaids , ice massage to the origin of the patellar tendon and NSAID / pain creams are helpfulonly for severe cases that don't improve w/ above and show degeneration of tendon on MRI is surgery performed.Gl!

Effusion: You're describing a knee "effusion" or collection of fluid surrounding the knee joint.  Effusions are the body's response to injury.  Since you have no pain, the injury is probably minor.  Best to rest it, elevate it and apply ice a few times a day for about 3 days.  Once the swelling goes down, you can resume normal activities, but do so gradually.  OTC Ibuprofen might help also.  Best wishes.

Knee pain: Awakening with knee pain and swelling without recent injury is consistent with acute prepatella bursitis with fluid buildup. Lack of fever and skin redness is reassuring that it most likely is not an infectious process. Apply cold compresses and take anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen. If no improvement see your physician or an orthopedic specialist for evaluation.

No: Most people have "knock knees". I have knock knees and i'm terrible at basketball. The doc was most likely trying to reassure you that having mild knock knees will not keep you from playing and succeeding at sports assuming you put the time and effort into it.

See details: The knee needs evaluation, preferably by an orthopedist. It may simply be a contusion but tears and even fractures are other possibilities.  An MRI may be needed to clearly define the cause.
