my dad had a total hip replacement in october last year and now he is getting bad knee pain on the same side why is this happening and what can help it?

: Followup with orthopedic surgery, as it appears that the knee now requires attention.  Films of the knee will likely reveal etiology.  Treatment will depend upon severity of knee problems.

my sister (82 year old) fractured her femur in a fall. the hip had previously had a resurfacing. x-ray revealed bone chips in the hip after surgery to do a total hip replacement. after three weeks pain in the hip and knee are increasing?

: Something is amiss. The surgeon who performed her hip replacement is best to evaluate her current status as he/she knew the state of her hip after the procedure,the condition at postop visits,any problems during physical therapy. X-Ray, CT scan or MRI, bone scans are studies that may shed light on her current symptoms. Early loosening of the prosthesis, while rare, is one problem to be looked for.

is it normal to have leg swelling after total hip replacement surgery?

Need evaluation: If the swelling is in the same leg as the surgery, and not in the other leg you need to be evaluated for a deep vein thrombosis (dvt). Okay to call your surgeon, and ask about an ultrasound of the leg, possible blood clot. Good luck.

Not necessarily: Leg swelling is not unusual after hip replacement, however, it can also indicate more serious conditions like blood clots.  Make sure you express your concerns with your surgeon so that they can examine your leg to determine if the swelling is normal or not.

Can be: While i wouldn't call it normal, leg lengthening is a potential result of total hip replacement and can be no big deal or a significant disability.  Leg lengthening has become less common with newer implants and surgical techniques.  Significant lengthening can be balanced with a heel lift in the other shoe.

Wait & See: Unless the nerve is completely cut, usuassly it is due to swelling or compression on the nerve and it commonly resolves ove time.

Not normal: No, it doesn't sound normal. Please call your surgeon and speak to the doctor on call with the answering service. If this is new, may need to go to ER.

i had total hip replacement 9 18 2012 hip responding very well but my knee on the same leg is very bothersome mostly upon compression (walking) my pt ?

A few possibilities: A persistent hip problem can cause referred pain to the knee on the same side.

You may be more active now that your hip is improved, unmasking what was a previously a lesser problem in your knee.

The hip replacement could have slightly changed the alignment of of your limb, which could cause changed loading of your knee.

You should talk to the orthopaedic surgeon who replaced your hip about thi.

i have a total hip replacement and the ball completely comes out of the socket went i place my foot to my knee and butterfly. is this normal? im in pain? sex hiking fishing snowshoeing kills me?

: Contact your orthopedic surgeon, and determine appropriate approach.  Revisional surgery may be needed.  In meantime, avoid provocative activities.

i am 12 weeks off of a total hip replacement and off crutches a week now. i woke up this morning and both my ankles and legs, below my knee, were very swollen and redwith white bite like spots. any guesses what it could be?

See doctor or go ER: This could be blood clots. You need to see your orthopedic asap or go to er.
