my dad had a total hip replacement in october last year and now he is getting bad knee pain on the same side why is this happening and what can help it?

Accepted Answer

: Followup with orthopedic surgery, as it appears that the knee now requires attention.  Films of the knee will likely reveal etiology.  Treatment will depend upon severity of knee problems.

is it possible to grow bone back to avoid having a knee or hip replacement?

Accepted Answer

No: Bone is not the problem, arthritis is caused by a loss of cartilage covering the bone.  Cartilage is that smooth shiny stuff on the end of the bone like you see on a drumstick at the joint.  We have many procedures to reproduce it in small amounts or repair it if only small areas are lost or damaged, but when there is more exposed bone than cartilage, hip or knee replacement becomes necessary.

Baker cyst: If there is a tender swelling behind knee you have to ask your doctor if somehow you don't have a Baker Cyst. It is a benign condition, but limits range of motion, treatable with NSAIDs, or sometimes gets  drained.

after having hip replacement is it feasible to have knee replacement and what are duration procedure involved?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It is not uncommon to need replacements in more than one joint. I joke with my patients : " does that knee have as many miles as that hip had?". Both legs too. Most insurances like 3 months between replacement surgeries.

With today's replacement parts, i tell my patients they can expect 15-20 year lifespan, if properly cared for.

i'm 58 y/o and had cartilage removed in my right knee 37 & again 13 years ago, could those have been a cause of my hip replacement?

No: An arthritic knee may have a small effect on the hip, but does not causes severe arthritis in the hip.

how long after a full hip replacement should the  leg / knee swelling last?

1-2 weeks for post o: Be careful here because residual lower extremity swelling could also indicate a blood clot which is not uncommon with hip arthroplasty.  It should be checked.

Wait & See: Unless the nerve is completely cut, usuassly it is due to swelling or compression on the nerve and it commonly resolves ove time.

i had total hip replacement 9 18 2012 hip responding very well but my knee on the same leg is very bothersome mostly upon compression (walking) my pt ?

A few possibilities: A persistent hip problem can cause referred pain to the knee on the same side.

You may be more active now that your hip is improved, unmasking what was a previously a lesser problem in your knee.

The hip replacement could have slightly changed the alignment of of your limb, which could cause changed loading of your knee.

You should talk to the orthopaedic surgeon who replaced your hip about thi.

is that normal to have a sore painful knee after a hip replacement?

Knee pain: I assume your hip has not been problematic after recuperating from the hip replacement.  Changing your gait after hip replacement may place strain on a knee that also may have osteoarthritis involvement. In my experience that is the usual cause of the knee symptoms following hip replacement.  Your orthopedic surgeon can evaluate you and advise you best.
