Very rare: Disorder affecting mostly adolescent males. Typically, abrupt episodes of excessive sleep (up to 20 hours) which goes on for days to weeks then stops.  Can be associated with emotional symptoms and uninhibited sex drive. Failure to remember episodes afterwards is common and individual returns to normal in between episodes.  No tests as it is a clinical diagnosis, and can be misdiagnosed like any.

Unlike depression, patients may be fine for long periods & then have days or weeks of prolonged sleepiness (&gt; 20 hours in day), sudden increase ravenous appetite. Unlike depression, there is confusion & sometimes hallucinations. Brain abnormality of hypothalamus & thalamus. No response to antidepressants. May improve w/ age.
