i'm on  klonopin 1mg 3 times daily... i still have panic attacks i was wondering if upping the dosage would help or switching to xanax (alprazolam)?

i took 2 mg of klonopin for the first time as prescribed by my psychiatrist at about 10 pm tonight but havent been able to sleep and am having panic attack systems. is it safe to take 1 mg of xanax at this point?

: It is not a good idea to take both medicines at the same time. The Klonopin takes a bit longer to take effect but it lasts longer. Both medicines can decrease your respirations so it is not a good idea to take both since your respirations can slow to a dangerous level. You should wait a bit longer for the Klonopin to take effect and then if it is not helping, call your doctor. Good luck!

Maybe not enough: Most likely the xanax (alprazolam) is still having some effect. Probably it is just not working well enough. Other treatments that are often helpful include serotonin antidepressants (sri's like prozac, zoloft, lexapro) and cognitive behavioral therapy. You should talk to your doctor. But don't abruptly stop the xanax (alprazolam).

Not a benzo: Better treatment for panic attacks would not be another benzodiazepine, but probably an ssri such as celexa, zoloft, or even prozac.  Other antidepressants such as Effexor (venlafaxine) may prevent panic attacks also.  Thought they can help when appropriately dosed, benzodiazepines are a temporary solution because tolerance may develop.  Cognitive behavioral therapy is an important part of treatment also.

How much, how often: The best ultimate treatment, long-term, for people with panic disorder is SSRI/SNRI antidepressants such as Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor (venlafaxine) and others. Benzos should be used only until those drugs kick in and/or for breakthrough symptoms. If you have been taking them every day at least 3 times a day for 3 weeks, there may be at least mild withdrawal. The best solution is to taper the Xanax slowly
