Different kinds: The doctors that typically deal with muscle injuries would be orthopedists and physiatrists (specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation). Sports medicine doctors would also be qualified to deal with this.

Ice for : Inflammation such as swelling in a joint, redness, bruising or sprain.  Heat for muscle soreness spasm or strain.  In general it is bad to put heat on a joint injury or contusion. If not sure use ice over heat.

Alot: While mechanisms of injury to these structures may be similar and in many cases treatment may be similar they are very distinct anatomically and in terms of function and healing potential. So it would be important to know the location, type and extent of injury.

Stretching.: Stretching your muscles for 10-15 minutes prior to activity is helpful. Also, warm up slowly and gradually, to loosen up.

I would of asked the: Doctor. I would imagine something like two weeks at which time it could be reevaluated, unless the doctor had already given a diagnosis of something more serious.

No: isolated steroid injections are not associated with growth delay or growth retardation.

No worry if no pain: I typically don't worry about painless popping and cracking of joints, even if asymmetric. Painful popping does need a physician evaluation.

If any doubt...: ...go get checked, and get the x-ray. Sorry, but we can't examine you from here. Nor are the absences of bruising, diminished range of motion, or severe pain definitive for a non-fracture.
