Doctors can you tell me when should ice or heat be used for joint or muscle/tendon pain?

Ice for : Inflammation such as swelling in a joint, redness, bruising or sprain. Heat for muscle soreness spasm or strain. In general it is bad to put heat on a joint injury or contusion. If not sure use ice over heat.
