Dozens of ways: Herpes simplex is a very common virus and the little girl may have gotten it from mom or dad, from other relatives or friends or her playmates.  Easy to transmit, impossible to get rid of once you have it, although in many people episodes of clinical symptoms are minimized with time.

Yes: Hsv-1 remains in your body once you get it once, however it becomes dormant - it goes to sleep - in one of your spinal nerves.  Sometimes, the virus can become reactivated, and cause more cold sores, but other times it remains dormant for life.

HSV 1 and HSV 2: Herpes simplex is divided into two types: HSV type 1 and HSV type 2. Both of these conditions can affect your mouth or your genitals and can be spread via oral sex. There no cure for HSV infection and often stress is an aggravating factor. Cold sores generally clear up without treatment within 10-14 days. It is your call.

Cold sores: Your friend's children were very contagious and your 1 yo was definitely exposed if they kissed, shared toys and hands, etc. If you kissed or played with them you could also be potentially infected. Frequent hand washing precautions should be observed now. If your newborn develops a rash, fever, or irritation of the eyelids or eyes, contact your pediatrician immediately. Ban  contact of your kids.
