Nerve injury?: your symptoms are concerning for cervical vertebral injury and associated nerve injury. symptoms may resolve with over the counter pain meds, but you need to be seen by a physician. if your pain turns to weakness, you should be seen emergently

Arthritis: Most commonly osteoarthritis, however you are on the young side for that to be symptomatic. Could be ligament laxity of the cmc joint, or possibly dequervains tenosynovitis of 1st extensor compartment. Recommend hand surgical evaluation.

thumbs have been really soar for months. now right thumb keeps popping out of joint. i've never injured it to my knowledge. this is very painful. why?

Subluxation: Either it is Trigger Joint or Subluxation of the joint. Do you do repeated movement with the Thumb?
 Try NSAID like Ibuprofen and seek Orthopedics consultation.

See details: This is a snapping thumb. It will often resolve with a local cortisone injection. Refractory cases require a surgical release. Rarely, it will resolve with treatment.

Popping thumbs: You might have trigger finger (trigger thumbs). It is characterized by catching, snapping or locking of the involved finger flexor tendon, associated with dysfunction and pain.  A disparity in size between the flexor tendon and the surrounding retinacular pulley system results in difficulty flexing or extending the thumb. See a hand specialist to confirm the diagnosis and to provide appropriate tx.

Arthritis: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you and your symptoms warrant evaluation by a physician. What you described suggests inflammation of the joint. You may take acetaminophen if it is painful. If the pain does not go away in a couple of weeks, it would be prudent to see a doctor.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Thumb pain: Could be a bug bite, a dislocation, or something else.  A cyst is a possibility but the quick onset put that low on the list.  Please see your doctor.  He/she will take care of you.  Peace and good health.
