There are varying roles for nurse anesthetist a but generally they need a md to consign/supervise them. They are advanced practice nurses that function as anesthetists in and out of the operating room suite.

BSN first: Most nurse anesthesia schools require BSN and some ICU experience. There is classroom work and OR experience leading to a master's degree. The typical program now is 2 years, but the trend is toward requiring additional education leading to a doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia.

Good choice: As an anesthesiologist i believe nurse anesthesia is a very rewarding easy going field. Though as in any field currently this field of crna is getting crowded and jobs are not as easy to get as it used to be recently.It means you may have to be flexible about where younpractice.

No: An anesthesiologist has 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, at least 4 years of residency training and then may have 1-2 years of fellowship.  A crna is a nurse who goes to nuse anesthetist school.  They ususally depending on state law, have to be under the supervision of an md (may not be an anesthesiologyist).  Md/do has much more advanced training over the crna.

A nurse anesthetist is a nurse that completed nursing school and a two-year nurse anesthetist school.

Training: From my experience working with nurse anesthetists, difference is training, which is much longer with anesthesiologists who are physicians. They are trained to deal with any kind of complications that can happen during and after an anesthetic. While most nurse anesthetists have harder time to deal and treat these complications. I f an anesthetic is uncomplicated either one can do a good job.
