There : There are many types of tumors that arise from bone, and many that arise from elsewhere but go to the bones and grow there. When we refer to "bone cancer" we usually mean a tumor that is malignant (can spread to other parts of the body) and that originates from cells that make the bone. Breast cancer for example can spread to bone and make a tumor there, but this tumor is composed of cells that arise from the breast tumor, not the bone, and so this is not truly a "bone cancer". Tumors of the bone are identified usually by one of two ways: the patient has pain at the site, or the patient breaks the bone through the tumor after a fall or other trauma. Bone tumors weaken the bone, and so sometimes even small traumas can break bones at the site of the tumor. Diagnosis is initially with an x-ray to show a lesion in the bone. This is usually followed with a biopsy of the bone if there is any concern that this lesion is anything but an obviously benign mass. The biopsy tissue is sent to a pathologist that looks at the tissue under a microscope and gives a diagnosis of what kind of tumor or "bone cancer" it is.

May be just a cyst: I see a lot of these.  The vast majority are just benign cysts, especially in young adults.  If it grows or bothers you, that's enough reason to get it removed.

Common: In my opinion bisphosphonates do very little to help with bone build up and at best maintain your bones and have tremendous side effects.  If you qualify Prolia or Evista (raloxifene) may be a better option.  Always calcium, nutrition and exercise are key.

Local university: Looks like a very challenging and complicated case. Would suggest that you go to an university medical center close to home to get help.  This is not for amateurs.

Probably infection: You must see a dentist. Xray can reveal a cyst, residual root, other infections from teeth, or cancer. Check it out.

Pain: Most of the time when we are talking about cancer of the bone it is from metastasis. That is were a cancer from another origin spreads to the bone.  Sometimes there is no symptom at all and we find these when we test by bone scan, xray, or ct scans.  The most common symptom when it develops is pain from pressure on the periosteum or covering of a bone. Fractures are also possible and cause pain.

Pain: It depends a lot on whether the tumor started in the bone, or spred there from another source. Best way to evaluate is to see your physician, and get a few tests, mainly xrays.

Few common ones: Pain, elevated calcium with it's resultant problems, brittle bones in spine needing cementing to minimize chance of compression fracture.
Need to consider Denosumab or bisphosphonate treatment.
