A member asked:

I need bisophanates but am so frightened of the side effects of osteonecrosis of the jaw, thrombosis, stroke, bone cancer etc etc how common are these?

Common: In my opinion bisphosphonates do very little to help with bone build up and at best maintain your bones and have tremendous side effects. If you qualify Prolia or Evista (raloxifene) may be a better option. Always calcium, nutrition and exercise are key.

Not so common: And much less common than the dread complications of osteoporosis. I'm not impressed with what i've read about the stroke or cancer risk; good oral hygiene and early recognition should help with the uncommon jaw osteonecrosis. Would like to hear from others about what they've decided.

Osteonecrosis: is rare with oral and more common with IV bisphosphnates. Discuss with our MD if he/she wants to prescribe bisphosphonates.
