Irritant. Don't use: Soap is soap. Soap suds enemas are highly irritating to the lining of the rectum and colon.  Aside from causing a bowel movement can  cause a whopping inflammation (colitis). Tap water enemas or store bought phosphate enemas are safer (check with md, especially if history of heart, kidney, liver trouble). Oil retention enemas are lubricant.

What are benefits?: Why are you performing it? If  constipation,  general recommendation: approximate more of a squatting position to facilitate easier passage of stool. Bring a small step in front of the commode, bring your feet up. Back in the wild, animals squat. Toilets are great, but  not optimal position for defecation. Enemas bring diarrhea, irritation of the colon wall. Try more fiber in the diet.

Bowel backed up: This is abnormal and you may have a partial obstruction or a problem with your colon.  You need to call your doctor for advice and get a check up asap to see what the cause of the problem is. If you can not see a doctor or iF you suddenly get a lot worse go to ER.

: Leave it alone. The more you mess with it the worse you will make it.
For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.

No: yoi are trying to manually disempact yourself?  This is unusual.  It is far better to see a doctor and let them care for you.

What kind of pain?: Need diagnosis first. "Cure" depends on if simply just hemorrhoids/fissure or something serious. Have you been straining at stool, have rectal dysfunction, perform an activity that increases pelvic engorgement with blood or increases pelvic pressure (heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, etc.)? History of colitis, infection, rectal/anal trauma or high risk? Best to get rechecked--don't delay please.

Possibly: You may have had an incomplete disimpaction or may be having some cramping as a result of an increase in intestinal movements or gas. If you have never had routine screening for colon cancer (colonoscopy being the most comprehensive), this event should serve as a reminder to see a gastroenterologist for this.
