i am taking itraconazole(spazol) for an fungus infection can i take xanax (alprazolam) and the same time as this drug and be safe?

Accepted Answer

Not really: Puts you at risk for increased xanax (alprazolam) level which can suppress your mental state since these meds all get metabolized by the liver.  Do you have a systemic fungal disease that is chronic?

is it safe to take itraconazole 100mg 2x daily for 14 days for resistant ringworm? doc didn't order liver check. worried about liver after reading warnings about the drug?

: No drug is "safe" 100% of the time. So you need to discuss with your Dr your situation and the risks and benefits to you and then you can make an informed decision. I would also look at Drugs.com for side effects reported in placebo controlled trials in folks like you. They will have published the side effects in those on vs those not on the medicine.

just finished 14 days of itraconazole capsules (100 mg 2x daily) for resistant ringworm. ringworm faded but not gone. doc rx'd 21 more days of this med at same dose. given the possible liver damage from this drug, is it really worth taking? concerned?

: Yes, it is safe to continue. It is not unusual at all we have to use this antifungal medication for more than one month.

Alcohol, I assume?: Antifungal agents like itraconazole have strong potential for liver damage. Even though no interactions between itraconazole & ethanol (alcohol) are listed, i'd advise against drinking while on this drug, for it has many other interactions, such as grapefruit juice & dozens of medications. Better to be safe.

is it okay to use topical micoconazole along with itraconazole capsules for ringworm? also, capsules say take with meal. what constitutes a meal? today, i took my pills 9 hrs apart instead of 12 to take with meal. should i take 12hrs apart? thanks?

: Take with a meal means to take with some food in your stomach and not to take when your stomach is empty.  I would like your pharmacist to answer the rest of your question.

prescribed itraconazole capsules. label says take 1 capsule 2x daily with a meal. my mornings are hectic. my meals are at 11:30 am and 7:00 pm. should i take these with a snack only @12 hours apart? or is it okay to take with meals 7 1/2 hours apart?

: Take medication with some foods is fine, not absolutely necessary with a full meal.

It is one of the med: It is not good or bad but it is a useful anti fungal antibiotic which can be used for nail fungus of finger and toe nails and yeast infections.

Sometimes: If you've got a fungus / seborrhea causing scalp problems, it can be very helpful. Your physician is your best guide here.

why didn't the onychomycosis after 1 cycle of sporanox (itraconazole) didn't go away?

Not a fungus?: Your onychomycosis should have been verified with fungal culture which should include a pas stain to avoid false negative culture results. Sporonox is typically taken over 3 months but does not have a 100% cure rate. Other oral antifungals include lamisil (terbinafine). Other conditions can cause a thick nail and you should be positive that it truly is a fungal infection.

while on a  15 day course of itraconazole, can i drink alcohol?

Yes: There does not appear to be a contraindication which is related to this particular medication.  Alcohol in the blood stream has some negative effects on white blood cell actions, and if you are being treated for infection, theoretically it is not a good idea to inhibit WBC activities (but this is probably inconsequential).
