why is it that liver problems give you itchy skin?

Bile salts: This is due to a build up of bile in the blood stream which then gets deposited in the skin and whites of the eyes. Along with bile there is a second chemical called bile salts - these also get deposited in the skin and cause distressing itching.  I have used Questran (cholestyramine) compounded cream 5% to help pull the bile salts from skin to help relieve itching. You can also take Questran (cholestyramine) orally to relievethis.

Itchy skin: Doubtful from the slightly elevated level.  You might just have dry skin, use lots of moisturizers.

please help me i have had itchy skin for 20 years and it is so bad now i am going crazy. when this all started i was diognosed with lupous and  then a coulple years later liver and then that didn't pan out they just gave me cream.  the itching is accross

I : I am so sorry to hear about your struggle with your skin. Since this has been going on for twenty years, if i recommend something that has been done or tried please forgive me. You need a complete allergy panel specifically for the area you live in. You should request skin and blood allergy testing. Have you tried Atarax (hydroxyzine) pills for itching? How about steroid injections every three months. Acupuncture?  Acupressure? A daily anti-histamine wont hurt. Also consider cutting out gluten and monitor for any improvement.

my husband is alcoholic and in pain in stoumach when he drinks he also has itchy skin  but no rash could this b liver failure?

Could be: It might just be alcoholic hepatitis, but it could also be cirrhosis.  Alcoholics also commonly get gastritis, or inflammation of the lining of the stomach, so that could be involved as well. The itchy skin does suggest a liver problem.  Is he jaundiced (yellow)?  He needs help!  please have him see a doctor.

i have acid reflux and i have been having intermittent itchy skin. can these two be related? i tried various skin lotions but it didn't help. my liver blood test have come normal. is the itchy skin an internal issue or because of dry skin?

Stress related: You may stress  that cause your reflux and cause your skin to be itch  intermittently. You may want to look into  this mental aspect.

lft on 19.09- bilirubin 0.5, sgot 28,sgpt 51. had paracetamol 2g/day for 15 days upto 31.08. now itchiness, yellow skin & eyes. is it liver damage?

Repeat tests: Why taking this med? Unless you are very small this is not a toxic dose. Any alcoholic drinks? Are you ill? Mononucleosis? Hepatitis? Why were liver tests done Sept 9? Now it is 2 weeks later. You have had no acetominophen for over 3 weeks? Any other meds?

Yes: Mono can cause a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. Wish you good health!

i have been having itchy skin colored small bumps going away and coming back behind both knees and on my butt cheeks for the last week. there might be 1 or 2 on my abdomen as well but they go away pretty fast there. my boyfriend has not had them?

: It could be Eczema. I would advise you to avoid itching and leave the area of itching alone for a while.
It is nothing serious. If the rash gets worse, you should get an examination by your family doctor. He/she may advise you to use a local application of anti-itching medicine some of which are available over the counter.

Yellow: The cause can be something as simple as eating a lot of foods high in vitamin a (carrots, yellow peppers) or as serious as hepatitis or liver cancer. See your doctor for an evaluation of your liver.

had burst appendix 8 mo ago, now have really lout belching and distended abdomen...also no energy? also have really itchy skin....quit smoking 8 mo ago after 40 yrs?

Distended abdomen: You have some symptoms that warrant evaluation, particularly the itching and the low energy, Get evaluated by your pcp.
