Sputum culture: Sputum sent for culture to see if any bacteria grow. Chest x-ray may not be helpful and bronchoscope in extreme cases may be necessary.

Bad condition: This rare illness produces the abrupt onset of high fever, cough, stridor, sputum which has gross pus in it, sometimes bloody sputum.  This is a true medical emergency and patients should be seen by a doctor asap.

Hopefully get better: If acute bacterial tracheitis is treated rapidly and appropriately your child should recover.
