Absorption.: Putting anything inside the nares will cause absorption of the substance, and in the case of anything menthol, it's toxic.  Most products designed to be ingested use a very dilute form of it, but this site discusses some of the reasons why certain forms should not be ingested.  The ointment form is pretty concentrated.

Nose picking? : It is really unusual to have scabs in your nose without trauma.  You can get nose bleeds with allergies or other reasons.  Sometimes people get nose bleeds with blood disorders.  You can also get nosebleeds with blood cancers like leukemia.  If you don't pick your nose, you need an evaluation

Olive oil: Not evidence based medicine, but it is very effective. You need to moisten the inside of my sore nostrils with an olive oil. Apply gently on a cotton swab before going to bed.

need flu shot but had to wait due to illness. will breathing through my scarf protect me from airborn droplets @the drs?  also heard putting ointment in nostrils can help?

See answer : A scarf or face mask will provide some protection, but it is not clear how much. Unlikely to block the penetration of small virus particles but likely helpful in reducing contact or viral load from coughing and sneezing-related sprays and splashes. Most effective prevention is minimizing contact with others, frequent hand-washing and avoiding touching your face, nose, eyes with hands and fingers.

is antibacterial ointment in nostril at all useful in adding defence against & stopping air borne germs like the flu? i know shot is better defense. unable to get.

No: Antibacterial ointment will not help prevent a person from catching the flu virus. Just wear a mask like the doctors do. Masks can be purchased at any drugstore.

Antibiotics: Many antibiotic ointments do not recommend their use intranasally. Some antibiotics can be, but it would be best to see your doctor to determine 1) if antibiotics are the best treatment for your problem and if so which one to use, 2) if not, what medicine is appropriate.

can i take a z-pack oral and mupirocin ointment topically to treat an abscess in my nostril ?

Doubt it will work: Topical abx for an abscess do little more than give you something to do. A z-pack is not a drug I would choose for this problem. It might help, but for most it is not the drug of choice to kill the staph that likely caused the issue.

i had a septoplasty in 2008. the scab in my nostril still hasn't healed after trying a few otc ointments and petroleum jelly. 2 ents couldn't fix it.

Consider a biopsy: The chance that this is a cancer is very small, but certainly, in my practice, a skin or mucosa lesion that does not heal warrants a biopsy. This is a very minor office procedure that can be done with local anesthesia. Talk to your surgeon about this.

i have a staff infection on my nose. i was given clindamycin for the outside and a nasal ointment for the nostril. i forgot to ask how should clean the area. is dove bar soap okay?
