Heart muscle active: Your heart muscle never hibernates (goes to sleep for a period of time). The heart muscle works according to the demand made upon it. Normally, if you are sitting or resting peacefully the heart does not have to beat rapidly or forcefully. If you are exercising or blood pressure is elevated the heart muscle must produce more force and in the case of exercise more speed as well.

No: Thickening of the heart muscle or hypertrophy may be caused by hypertension but other causes such as a genetic disorder with congenital hypertrophic myopathy need to be excluded.  The echocardiogram is the usual way to determine if your heart muscle is thickened and the degree of regression of the thickening may be used to show the effectiveness of antihypertensive therapy.
