On average....: 3 days is the cutoff interval. White wine/Vodka are good substitutes but limit your alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks

hi i have had black stools like tar for like 5 years or more. i thought this was due to me drinking 3 or 4 glasses of red wine a night. stool sample shows very small amount of blood doctor wants to do a colonoscopy. i hear you can die from this ?

GI bleeding: Occult gastrointestinal bleeding (i.e. unknonwn source) is potentially serious, either because the actual cause of bleeding can be dangerous (e.g. cancer) or because slow bleeding can become sudden and even life threatening. The risk of dying from whatever is the cause of this problem is far higher than from the colonoscopy. Follow your doctor&#x27;s advice!

i have a colonoscopy in two days (i.e. it is tuesday today, colonoscopy is thursday afternoon). i am on a white diet (only white foods) and then onto clear fluids from 6pm the day before (wednesday).

on the white diet am i allowed white wine?

AVOID: That is an interesting question. I would try and stay away from wine before your colonoscopy because of all the restrictions. It will not be for that long.

had c-diff. once cleared, doc did colonoscopy. everything perfect. did notice redness (erythema...no blood) in rectum. did random biopsies. some blood in stool 2 day after. very mild cramping. normal?

It very well may be: BUT there are serious cautions. If you really kept it to 4-5 ounces and didn't go on to gradually drink more and more, it would probably be fine....even good! But we (doctors) see SO MANY people not be able to keep to this modest amount. There is some evidence that red wine is superior to other forms of alcohol but this evidence is weak. A MODEST daily amount is not harmful; it may well be helpful

Lose weight: If you are overweight, losing weight and eating a whole food anti-inflammatory diet  that is low in simple carbohydrates can help to reduce fat production in your body and may help to reduce fat in your liver. The less alchohol you drink the better. Wine has empty calories, stops fat burning, and increases your appetite. Fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis.

Follow instructions: Generally speaking, the working definition of a liquid is clear is one in which you can pour in a glass and still be able to 'read the newspaper through it'.  Apple sauce is not allowed.  Red jello and liquids are not allowed because they can make any remaining fluid in the colon at the time of the colonoscopy look like blood. Follow your prep instructions so you can get the best exam possible.

All: Forms of alcohol, beer whiskey wine are diuretics and dehydrate especially if taking alot. The dehydration does in deed contribute to constipation. Red or white wine, makes no difference.
