Red Dye #40:  &amp; Pervasive Developmental Disorder ??  Not sure. Red #40 (Allura Red) is the most frequently used dye. There are concerns that it may be linked to  hyperactivity, ADHD &amp; autism spectrum disorders. There is also possibility of hypersensitivity Rxn's. This merits further study.

i used a hair dye that apparently has ppd in it...and i keep seeing online things about ppd and tuberculosis? does this mean i'm going to get tb?

PPD vs. PPD: PPD in hair dye is Paraphenylenediamine, a chemical which may cause scalp allergy.
PPD test for Tb is "purified protein derivative", the stuff in the shot they put under your skin to see if it makes a lump if you've been exposed to Tb. It is a safe and effective test.

i have a severe allergie to ppd in hair dyes. i have heard a few things about people who are allergic to ppd can be to epidurals.  is this true?

Epidural is OK: If you are allergic to paraphenylenediamine, it is possible that you could react to some local anesthetics. There are two chemical types of local anesthetics. You may react to the type called "aminoesters", which include Chloroprocaine and tetracaine. The good news is that you can receive the more widely used "amide" local anesthetics: lidocaine, bupivacaine, and mepivacaine.

Ppd reading red?: No redness does not mean it is positive.You feel  the induration in mms to interpret it after 48 to 72 hours.5mm or more is positive in HIV posotive person, in someone with recent exposure to tb, with nodular or fibrotic changes on xray consistant with healed TB and patients with organ transplant and immunocompromised
10mm or more +in recent arrivals from high prevalace ares
nursing homes
15mm + in.

what happens when a ppd test is too deep? can it cause the area to turn red?

Less Reliable: If the PPD test is too deep it usually is not as effective.  It can turn the area red, just like the regular test, and if you have tb, might harden like the typical test, but is less likely to do so.  A TB test is considered positive when an area bigger than a dime is firm to touch. It should be repeated if it was administered improperly.

how's ppd different from normal hardship of new parenthood? i filled out a survey at 5-week pp appt; it didn't raise red flags, but i'm not so sure.

Reevaluation: Post partum depression is very common. Typically if patients are asking about it then they likely are at risk. It is often missed because doctors do not screen for it and patients are often embarrassed to bring it up. Depends on size: If the location of the PPD placement was red but there was no swelling or bump, then i would agree that it was ok as well.

PPD: Good news is, its probably not active tb. Bad news, sounds like latent TB infection.  A frank discussion with infection control, chest x-ray, and lab work is needed to discuss latent TB infection.

Tuberculosis: You have been exposed to tuberculosis or have been immunized with BCG vaccine. Usually the next step is a chest xray.

PPD: A positive PPD means that the area of the skin involved becomes indurated (hard to the touch) and the diameter necessary for a positive test varies with your immune status. Redness is usually due to an allergic or inflammatory reaction to one or more substances in the PPD preparation. This is not to be worried about.  Good luck.
