Neither: The term "bioidentical" is a marketing tool, used to make people believe that these products are somehow better or safer than other forms of hormones.  There is no good evidence that this is true.  Most topical creams are not regulated by the fda, and so their effectiveness is mostly unknown.  Estrogen is the much more effective hormone for treating menopausal symptoms than progesterone.

It can be: Known situations that make it unsafe include past blood clotting disorder, history of breast or endometrial cancers, endometriosis, fibroids, liver problems or elevated triglycerides (type of cholesterol).  Common adverse effects: nausea/bloating, breakthrough vaginal bleeding, weight gain, mood swings, breast tenderness. That said, considered safe if cautious and very effective for hot flashes.

Hormonal changes: If your weight loss was rapid then you are likely decreasing your amount of circulating Estrogen. Fat cells secrete Estrogen. Losing the fat decreases the Estrogen. Consider getting your thyroid and blood sugar checked too. Congrats on the weight loss. Keep up the good work.

: Although "age 48" is statistically "early" for menopause, sudden stopping of supplemental estrogen taken for perimenopausal relief of " mood swings, night sweats" will result in resumption of withdrawal symptoms.  Consult your gyn physican about low dose oral contraceptives , as this may carry one through the adjustment to perimenopause.
