Cosmetic appearance: x-ray along with examination by a experienced clinician is best way to tell. Some people think that if it looks cosmetically okay and you can breathe through each nostril then give it some time and see if it heals on its own. The difficulty is that when you have swelling it can be hard to determine if the alignment is okay.

: I would say unless you are not satisfied with the appearance of your nose there is no need to even go through with the X ray, however you are right that the X ray would reveal information about the healing.

Skin irritation: Rubbing one's nose should not cause a fracture (broken nose).  It usually requires a fairly hard hit on the nose or nasal bridge to cause a fracture.  What you are describing sounds like skin irritation and some minimal trauma from the rubbing.  It may also be due to whatever is causing you to rub your nose so much.

Nasal Popping Sound: This sounds like a normal sound of your cartilages moving against one another or the bony junction and does not indicate that you have broken your nose.
