i really want to get pregnant with my husband. my docs have me on a miralax (polyethylene glycol) and dolcolax regimine that they don't want me off of. can that hurt my chaces or are they relatively safe meds?

Yes: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is an osmotic laxative it attracts water into the stool which makes it swell giving you the urge to pass it. It will 'relieve' constipation if that is what you are asking. An actual 'cure' requires a determination of the cause. It is safe for you to use in pregnancy so long as you do not use it frequently. If you overuse it you may cause a dangerous imbalance in your electrolytes, .

Good meds: These agents essentially stay within the gut and are minimally absorbed if at all, into the body. Since they don't reach the blood in any significant amount, they cannot have an effect on the fetus.Part of the category c label comes from not having enough research reports to move it into a safer listing.The  cat c meds show no negative effects on baby.

Maybe: Both MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) and colace are considered category c drugs, indicating that their safety during pregnancy is unknown.  However, I am sure that most obstetricians have used them with impunity.  Make sure that you check with your OB before using them.

I prescribe it: There are many options for constipation in pregnancy.  First involves making sure you are taking enough water and fiber in your diet.  Metamucil or fibercon can be used in addition to natural sources of fiber. Colace twice daily often helps as well.  But for those patients who don't see improvement on that regimen, either a dulcolax suppository or MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) is the next thing i typically suggest.

i'm 34 weeks pregnant and taking 3 iron pills a day for anemia. is miralax (polyethylene glycol) safe to take or is there something that would be better?

Yes: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is safe in pregnancy. It is used to treat occasional constipation. It works by holding water in the stool to soften the stool and increases the number of bowel movements. It is known as an osmotic-type laxative. It is classified as a category C drug.

Maybe...: It's non-systemic, but i doubt it's been tested in pregnant women. Best to check with your obstetrician before taking anything when you have baby on board.
