Reduce volume: Babies tend to drink larger volumes faster when drinking from a bottle than from a breast. It may be that your infant needs help slowing down. Feed him 1-2 oz at a time while holding him upright, and give him a break by taking time to burp him, then another 1-2 oz 5-7 minutes later until the bottle is done. Keep him upright after feeding (don't lay him down) and make sure he is well burped.

Lactose : Lactose intolerance is the lack of an intestinal enzyme called lactase and is the inability to digest lactose - the sugar found in milk and other dairy products.  Babies are born with the lactase enzyme and most lactose intolerance does not occur until age 3 or older if at all.  Symptoms can be bloating, cramps, diarrhea, nausea and poor growth in children.  Some races such as asians and african americans are more susceptable to lactose intolerance than caucasians.

2%-3% of infants have milk allergy and the good news is that many of them outgrow in by 3-5 years of age.  Milk allergy is actually the body's immune system recognizing cow milk protein in the intestines as a foreign substance and causing symptoms like loose, sometimes bloody stool, irritability, vomiting and food refusal.  This usually occurs in the first few months of life.  The incidence of milk allergy is lower in breast fed babies than formula fed babies, but some babies react to the cow's milk protein transferred through the mother's milk from the dairy in the mother's diet.  Breast feeding is best and you can continue if you restrict or eliminate milk and dairy products from your diet.  Just make sure you are getting enough calcium from non-dairy sources!

Unable to determine: I can not answer this question not knowing the type of formula or whether or not your child is having any problem with it.

If the formula your baby is taking, is working well, then continue with that. If you are having a problem with diarrhea, vomiting, or other symptoms, see your doctor for the best recommendation. Follow up with your doctor regularly to see if your baby is growing well.

i try giving my baby a formula s26 he had rash and peadea change the formula to nan sensitive and now is worse than before he cries and pitt now and then and unsettled to much so i think maybe he is lactose intolerance and just stop to give  formula?

: Your baby needs formula for normal growth and development. The rash may be an indication of an allergic reaction. Please discuss hypoallergenic and non dairy based formulas and testing with your PCP.

SWITCH: but don't stop without gradually introducing solid food....A change in formula might be indicated. Ask your Pediatrician! BTW in addition to introducing solids you might consider using a 'sippy cup" or other device to wean baby from the bottle itself.

Lactose intolerance: Lactose intolerance most commonly runs in families, and symptoms usually develop during the teen or adult years, although babies can also get this.  It is due to deficiency in the enzyme lactase which degrades lactose, the sugar in milk. Most people with this type of lactose intolerance can eat some milk or dairy products without problems.

Not common: Congenital lactose intolerance is really not very common.  Many people think their babies are lactose intolerant when in fact they are not.  Babies who have true formula problems really have milk protein allergy.  Those babies present with eczema and bloody stool and need hypoallergenic formula.  Soy or lactofree do not usually help in these cases .  Before changing formula, talk to your pediatria.
