Lots of things: Inflammation of the mucosa of an airway below the vocal cords without actual disruption of the epithelial layer that lines it.  Anything from a chest cold to acid stomach reflux while you sleep (this can be serious), to a popcorn hull that was forgotten to autoimmune disease to "coughing-type asthma" (which i have) to a lung cancer.  If it lasts more than two weeks -- physician office visit.

Possibilities...: Persistent chronic non-productive cough is usually due to bronchospasm (due to any cause), post-nasal drip, gerd or a combination of these diagnoses. An evaluation by a doctor is needed for diagnosis since these all have different treatments. If you smoke, smoking cessation is needed to decrease airway inflammation.

Nope: HPV infection itself does not cause cough. For example, cough rarely if ever is a sign of a newly acquired HPV infection. If you think you might have been exposed, get tested -- but symptoms almost never are helpful.

Not likelly: A cough is not a reported side effect of metformin.  Patients with diabetes are often taking blood pressure medications in the group called ace inhibitors; these often cause a dry cough, so if you are taking one of these medications it is likely that it may be causing your cough rather than the metformin.

Swollen gland: The swollen gland is probably a lymph node caused by the bacteria or virus that caused the cough and cold in the first place.  Most of these swollen glands  will resolve over time. OK to stop: Cough medicines are only for symptoms so if your cough is better, you can stop the cough medication. If you were given an antibiotic on the other hand, you always want to finish the course.

Likely: Allergies are a frequent cause of cough. But there are cases where the "cough" is in place of a wheeze and maybe asthma, which is treated entirely differently.

Viral: Take OTC Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. Drink lot if tea.use a humidifier at night.drink lot of water which is not cold. Avoid all fruits,juice soda and junk food. If overweight lose it . If you have acid reflux eat light meals and eat dinner early. There is a nasty virus all over US , not sure where u live . If not better in few days,see a doc
