Propranolol: The effectiveness of a beta blocking drug for helping anxiety is related to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier which, in turn, is related to it's lipophilic vs hydrophilic properties. Both drugs cross, but propranolol does it better, so may be more effective in some people.

No need: to be specific, it gets down to preferences: I prefer cardio-selectives = beta 1 like metoprolol (personally I prefer Bystolic), but sometimes nonselectives= beta 1 &amp; 2) like propranolol are preferred

on propranolol 20 mg 2x a day for svt (wpw), &hbp. i need one that lasts longer but can't take er. toprol (metoprolol) was to strong even at 25 mg. any suggestion?

Lots of options: There are lots of other options for controlling palpitations besides Propranolol and toprol (metoprolol) xl.   Given your history of wpw, however, it requires being careful; sometime these medications can actually make the palpitations worse.  It'd be important to see your electrophysiologist or general cardiologist to try another medication, or consider other treatment options (e.g., ablation therapy).

i went to the er yesterday morning with what appeared to be very extreme anxiety with an elevated heart rate of upwards 180 at times. was giving metoprolol to slow it down. i have propranolol at home, can i take that instead if it happens again?

: Do NOT attempt to treat abnormal heart rhythms on your own.  Take the metoprolol as your doctor recommended, and if you develop a rapid pulse again while on the medication, return to the ER.  Do not independently add propranolol.  If not done previously, do have a cardiologist involved.

i am taking metoprolol succinate er 50mg for blood pressure related to anxiety. i have also been prescribed propranolol and/or clonazapam for public speaking or general anxiety. is it ok to take either of these with my metoprolol succinate er 50mg?

Metoprolol: Like propranolol, metoprolol is a beta blocker and will lower your blood pressure and slow your heart rate. This additive effect may be too much for you. Your MD, who knows you best, can advise you better,however.

Cause tight airway: These medications are beta-blockers which can act in many places in your body including your airways.  The medications may worsen your asthma/copd by worsening lung bronchoconstriction (airway tightening). Also makes it harder for asthmatics to respond to their rescue medications - which is a beta-agonist.

: Suspect that you will have even worse side effects from propranolol, and some potential problems would include: a slow pulse, blood pressure drop, headaches, exercise intolerance, depression, wheezing, fatigue, etc.  Get a second opinion.

Allergy: If you mean allergy as in rash then likely explanation would be filler.  Both medications are Beta blockers and it would be unusual to not be allergic to both.  However medications are compounded with various fillers and that would be likely cause of your allrrgy.

Metoprolol: They are both beta blockers , metoprolol has a slightly longer half time and is more beta specific . In general they are fairly similar in practice. One or the other may be a bit more effective for an individual problem.
