how can i breathe with my scoliosis back brace?

Accepted Answer

Normally: You should be able to breathe normally.  When you first get your brace, it may feel tight and cause you to take frequent, short breaths.  Most orthotists have a schedule for wearing a brace that allows you and your body to adjust.  Maybe just a short time the first day and then slowly increased time over 2-4 weeks.  You should ask the person that made your brace.

will i have to wear a huge neck/back brace due to scoliosis?

Accepted Answer

No: Bracing is only used when a scoliosis patient is not full grown. Once you are mature the scoliosis curve will stay the same but it can slowly progress if the curve was greater than 40 degrees.

i am in a back brace for scoliosis my 2 curves  is 60 degrees and my bottoms is 40 . i am tired if wearing the brace what other things could i do ?

Scoliosis : Scoliosis can be treated with a brace. Scoliosis 60 degrees: more likely surgery will be the next thing to consider.

would i need a back brace if i have minor scoliosis?

Accepted Answer

Scoliosis : Not likely to be indicated. Enroll in pilates course.  Focus on keeping a bmi around 25 or lower.

do i have to wear my back brace at night? when i get my back brace for scoliosis, will i have to wear it at night, too, or just during the day?

Accepted Answer

Depends: You may want to discuss this with your doctor.  In most cases, the brace is known as a 23 hour brace meaning you wear it all times except for showering etc.  There are other types of braces and in my patients with mild curves that are not likely to progress i let my ptients wear them less. is a back brace always required for scoliosis? i've been told i have scoliosis, but it isn't severe. will i need a back brace, or can mild scoliosis be treated in other ways?

Accepted Answer

Mild : Mild scoliosis is usually just monitored by the doctor.  Back brace is not always needed.  Some people have benefit from yoga.  I would discuss this with your doctor and yoga instructor. Good luck!

will a back brace limit my activities? i'm getting a back brace for scoliosis. does this mean i won't be able to do things like sports?

Accepted Answer

No: I encourage my patients to stay active, despite having to wear a brace for scoliosis.  I allow them to come out of their brace for participation in sports.  In many cases, i believe bracing is important to control curves and avoid surgery, but you should still participate in the things you enjoy doing.  Thank you for your question.

my son is 12 years old. his recent xray shows primary thoracolumbar scoliosis of 13.2 concave to the left. does he need a back brace or what would the treatment be?

Accepted Answer

Depends on details: The pediatric orthopedic spine doctors usually consider a brace if the angle has reached 20-25 degrees and the teen still has significant years of growth left, or if the angle is less than 20-25 degrees but has rapidly progressed at least 5 degrees at the 4 to 6-month follow-up appointment. That means a follow-up scoliosis x-ray is important to do, usually twice a year.

decreased lung capacity due to scoliosis. not eligible for a brace or surgery. what can i do to help this? run out of breath walking up stairs even.

Accepted Answer

Scoliosis: Consult a physical therapist who may be able to give you exercises to breath better. A pulmonologist might also be sble to help you
