Aspiration: What you describe is an aspiration event. Usually, our reflexes protect our airway from foreign objects getting down into the lungs. Certain populations are at higher risk for aspiration pneumonia, usually due to a failure of these reflexes. I would monitor your symptoms and follow up with your doctor if you develop fever or persistent cough.

i suffer with bad anxiety. i choked on some water yesterday by swallowing down the wrong pipe. im not sure that i coughed all of it up. will i get aspiration pneumonia this way?

: Not likely. Risk factors for aspiration pneumonia are old age, drinking large amounts of alcohol, poor gag reflex, and being less alert from medications or illness.  If you are otherwise healthy, you will not develop pneumonia by choking on water.

Symptoms: Please go to a local emergency room today. If things aren't to bad they can treat you and send you home. If your conditions is worse you will be transferred to the hospital. Hope all goes well.

Depends: For the most part it is just another protein source. If it comes from an infected source, you could acquire whatever bacteria or viral process is ongoing. Otherwise, whatever pleases you is fine.

Yes: Flu can include an invasion of the lungs by the germ and an extensive outpouring of mucous triggering cough. It can and does get bad in some patients. Her age makes it likely she will beat this. As long as you can carry on a conversation with her, she drinks and feeds &amp; shows no increasing breathing discomfort you can monitor at home. If this changes or she spooks you have her re-evaluated.

my child is 4 & learning to swim. he swallowed a gulp of pool water about four times in an hour, he coughed and cont playing. how would i know if he inhaled the water too? do i need to worry? i read about 2nd drowning or pneumonia. hes acting fine?

: The coughing reflex is designed to prevent significant aspiration, or the inhaling of a foreign substance. A small amount of water getting into the lungs is usually not problematic and coughing allows much of the aspiration to be prevented. If he develops signs of infection-like fever, decreased activity-or difficulty breathing, then have him seen by a doctor ASAP. Best of luck to you!

im on day 7 of covid. the dr prescribed azithromycin 5 pack to take to prevent pneumonia. i cant swallow pills so i cut them in half. is that okay? one half was already half way dissolved before i was able to fully swallow. it was basically melted?

: Azithromycin will be equally effective taken this way, as long as most of each dose is swallowed. Whether it will do any good is uncertain. Bacterial pneumonia, which might be prevented by azithromycin, is uncommon in paitents with COVID-19, and taking antibiotic ahead of time could raise the chance of pneumonia resistant to antibiotics. All in all, probably not much risk, but discuss w/ doctor.
