i have a 90% blockage in one of my carotid arteries, i'm 65years old in good health,would in be advisable to have surgery to remediate blockage?

Vascular surgeon: This is a decision that should be made by a vascular surgeon. Stenting or endarterectomy are often recommended for such an extensive carotid artery blockage even in the absence of symptoms. Occasionally such patients without symptoms are placed on daily aspirin and followed closely for any warning symptoms.

my father is 80 years old and one of his carotid arteries is 90% blocked - is he a good candidate for surgery or not?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: It depends on his general health especially the condition of his heart and lungs.  The surgeon must report no more than a 3 - 5% complication rate.  He may be a candidate for a stenting procedure if he has heart problems or multiple strokes.

2017/ 2018/2019 all brain & cervical mra follow up on aneruysm all good. dec 21 mra now shows moderate stenosis in carotid arteries cervical spine how can this happen so fast? not a smoker 8st good diet excercise?

: You could ask a radiologist to review the prior studies to determine whether there was some carotid stenosis in those studies. It is felt by some experts that mild stenosis progresses slowly while stenosis of 50 % or more progresses more rapidly. I recommend consulting a vascular surgeon to determine how best to follow-up your carotid stenosis.

Yes: When you are told "clear arteries" by angiogram, I suspect the doctors means "no obstructive coronary artery disease".  That is not the same as saying as you have pristine arteries. There is likely some intimal thickening and or mild cholesterol buildup at your age, therefore one baby asprin 81 mg is probably the best thing u can do for yourself to reduce your risk of stroke and/or heart attack.

would this mean the carotid artery's also?

Very likely: There is a good correlation between coronary artery disease and carotid artery disease - almost 60%  . So a normal coronary artery is likely to indicate a low probability of carotid artery disease. If you absolutely need to know you can get a simple carotid artery ultrasound .( this is a non invasive simple test)

: CAC score of zero virtually excludes development of coronary artery blockages in the next several years, but there can be a disconnect with carotid artery plaque formation. Moderate carotid artery stenosis isn't a great predictor of strokes, but I would consider taking daily low dose aspirin and consulting a vascular surgeon to advise you.on how.often to repeat carotid artery studies.

Arteries to brain: The carotid arteries extend out from the aorta into the neck and supply blood to the brain.  There is a left and right.  Each side divides near the middle of the neck into the internal and external carotid arteries.  The internal continues into the skull while the external supplies blood to the face and neck.  Before the carotid artery divides it is called the common carotid artery.

Yes. : Any artery that is not "hardened" with plaque or calcium can go into spasm.  However, connecting spasm with clinical symptoms is a more difficult.  If you are concerned you should consult a vascular surgeon or neurologist.

Not really : Statins stabilize plaque so they are the best defense against atherosclerotic plaque. They decrease ischemic and embolic events. However, they do not reverse a stenosis.

Absoltuely: Blocked carotid arteries can cause a number of problems ranging from a slow decrease in the oxygen getting to one eye to a sudden blockage of blood flow from a clot.
