Airplanes &amp; ears: Flying with a middle ear infection is safe, but may be uncomfortable with changes in pressure.  When the middle ear space fills with fluid the pressure increases, and there is a small risk of ear drum rupture.  This is not dangerous and usually heals up on its own.

Possibly: You could experience a significant amount of pain with this. Sudafed will help. I have never seen anyone who ruptured an eardrum from this so you may want to take a few sudafed and chance it.

Accepted Answer

Yes: If it is a true middle ear infection it means there is fluid &amp; or pus in your middle ear space. This would end the common changes experienced in flight when air is forced out of that space during the ride up &amp; it comes back when you land creating the need to yawn/pop your ears. Some suggest  this could rupture the drum but that has not been so in my experience.

VERTIGO: There are rx to give to prevent dizzy spells from the inner ear.You will be ok if rx is given.

Jaw ache: Bruxism. See dentist and get night guard made. No gum chewing, hard candies.  Take ibuprofen. Moist hot compresses. Soft diet when symptomatic.

Often used: Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a category B drug meaning it is generally considered safe for use.

is it safe to perform the valsalva maneuver while i have an ear infection? (plugging my nose and blowing to pop my ears). the discomfort is really bad, but i don't want to try it if it could make the pain worse or cause damage.

Valsalva maybe: If you have negative pressure in the middle ear space, gentle Valsalva might provide relief.  If you have positive pressure, could make it worse.  How do you know you have an ear infection?  I'd discuss with someone who has examined your ears and seem your ear drums.

Hydrogen peroxide:wa: If pain or fever or bleeding from ear canal see PCP.  If previous history of ear wax, try weekly rinse of canal with hydrogen peroxide: water in 1 to 1 proportions.

Yes but wouldn't: You can fly with an ear infection but there is a significant chance that you will have severe ear pain or rupture of the ear drum on descent.
