Interesting question: If you are asking about yourself, please see your doctor for a proper diagnosis! i look for signs of distress such as depression, thoughts of suicide, mood changes such as "manic highs." I am concerned when people are hearing voices, having visual  hallucinations. I look for people who are unable to take care of themselves, or exhibit violent behavior. Can be hard to tell if drugs/alcohol in mix!

Learn all you can: About that persons illness and circumstances. Be clear about your own mental health. What resources do you have to be able to provide the care you anticipate giving. Have as many of those resources around you that are also aware of the persons needs. That sounds like a lot, but i assure you there are more resources than you know at first. You just have to ask and put them in place.

Get evaluated: You could see a phd level psychologist for a psychological evaluation or a psychiatrist for a psychiatric evaluation.  You could also see a social worker working at a mental health center that has familiarity with the diagnosis of mental illness.  If you are struggling with psychotic thoughts or thoughts of suicide or homicide then you can be evaluated in the emergency department.  Stay safe!

See below: The difference between the nursing home and residential care is based on the level of functioning. In the residential setting, this person able to feed, to toilet, to transfer, to ambulate, to void and to defecate independently. Also good behavioral control is important. If the person develops major changes in functional and behavioral status, the nursing home placement is the best way to go.

Quite different: Mentally ill people may be very challenging to work with in that they exhibit symptoms that may be hard to handle, such uncontrollable emotions, unusual behaviors - anger (excessive), panic attacks, violent behaviors, hallucinations, delusions etc. A caregiver for such patients must be ready to intervene on an emergent basis to refer such patients for acute care.  There may some safety risk involv.
