Yes: This is at the top end of the recommended intake. But you probably don't need to take it. Just make sure u eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Also, storebought bread usually has Folic Acid in it. I have seen many people who get upset stomach with this high dose. Why not just take 400 mcg, or rather, focus on eating right? Good luck!

i'm preparing for pregnancy and am taking a prenatal vitamin with 800 mcg of folic acid. is adding an additional 200 safe? i want twins!!

Yes: 1000 mcg of folic acid is safe, but probably not necessary.  800 mcg is plenty, even if you want twins.  (Folic acid will not increase your chances of having twins).  Folic acid supplementation is for the prevention of neural tube defects (such as spina bifida).

Totally safe: There is no known toxic dose of folic acid.
However, 30% of people can't convert Folic Acid to the active form, l-5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (l-5-mthf) so those people are far better off taking a supplement with l-5-mthf.

Safe  but: It's safe but not likely to be effective. What are you treating? Not heart disease! And you may increase your risk of kidney stones if you're so inclined.

Yes: Folic acid is a good vitamin and you cannot overdose on it. We recommend 400 to 1000 mcg for all reproductive age women.

Several causes: Vegans are vulnerable to deficiencies in these vitamins because they eat no animal source foods. These deficiencies may show up in alcoholism too. Also, elderly people and those with genetic polymorphisms can absorb these vitamins poorly.  Eating foods rich in B12 & folate (folic acid) (such as legumes & leafy greens) can help.  Taking vit B12 and Folic Acid as your doctor suggests, is safe.
