If there is a lack of iodine (which is unusual in the us), or if there is a problem with the functioning of the thyroid, then it is not uncommon for people to have some of the symptoms of depression. Technically, this is not diagnosed as depression; instead, it is called "depression secondary to thyroid insufficiency".

Yes: Iodine deficiency will cause hypothyroidism and enlargement (goiter) of the thyroid. Do not take more than about 1000 mcg of iodine because high doses can cause problems if you have hashimoto's thyroiditis. Also, 2 recents reports from china and japan have suggested that high doses of iodine may increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Too much of a good thing is then not good.

It is still a sizable problem in the developing world however.   It would probably take at least a month or two (if not longer) before a low iodine diet would lead to clinical hypothyroidism.  The use of iodized salt generally will prevent this problem.

Not necessarily: If you need iodine, best to get it first from food and if not able to, then ask your doctor for best iodine supplement. Multivitamins may or may not include minerals such as iodine.
