Low thyroid : Iodine is an essential mineral and the body must have it to make thyroid hormone. There is recent evidence that low intake may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Iodine deficiency: Slow down. Check with your doctor about your thyroid levels and also have the doctor discuss iodine deficiency. There most likely will be no problems.

1-2 weeks: If there is a chance of micro-organisms in drinking water, it needs to be treated. Iodine can be safely used to kill most micro-organisms for up to a few weeks, but should not be used by people with thyroid conditions or pregnant women, and kept out of reach by children. For longer trips, other treatments should be used. Read more here: http://wwwnc.Cdc.Gov/travel/page/water-treatment.Htm.

It's formula: From wikipedia: "usp tincture of iodine is defined in the U.S. National formulary (nf) as containing in each 100 ml, 1.8 to 2.2 grams of elemental iodine, and 2.1 to 2.6 grams of sodium iodide. Alcohol is 50 ml and the balance is purified water. This "2% free iodine" solution provides about one mg of free iodine per drop." iodine is neutral i2; iodide is a -1 charged ion (i-).

Very: Iodine is an essential nutrient. You need it primarily for proper thyroid health which is involved in the regulation of your metabolism, among other things. Most salt in the U.S. Is iodized - that is, it contains iodine. However, unless you have a thyroid disorder, you only need iodine a few times in your life - your body stores it and re-uses it.

Iodine RDA: Recommended dietary allowance in adult men & women is 150 μg a day. One teaspoon of iodized salt contains approximately 400 μg iodine. Most iodine-containing multivitamins have at least 150 μg iodine, but only about half of multivitamins in the U.S. Contain iodine. See chart for other sources of iodine.
