i'm suddenly having a lot of pain in my intestinal area. it's not nausea & cramps. pain is a new for me. usually becomes worse after eating lasting up to 2 hours. no relief from meds. i'm concerned as i don't know this pain from before.

Doctor can evaluate: With such tummy symptoms, a person can write down everything he eats or drinks, on a daily calendar, and take it to his primary care or G.I. doctor for evaluation. Include on the diary:  what symptoms occur, when did they start, what makes them better or worse, how symptoms change with foods, what meds were tried, any past illnesses or condition, any family history of such problems, etc...

sometimes i have intestinal cramping, will pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) or mylanta help with this...the symptoms come and go after an intestinal bug?

Depends: Do not use peptobismol, as bismuth is toxic. Consider good probiotics, and avoiding wheat and dairy until you heal.

can zofran (ondansetron) relieve strong intestinal cramping (probably gastroenteritis related, or just in general) or is it only for nausea/vomiting?

It is for: NAUSEA and VOMITING and has little to no LOWER intestinal effects!

Please specify q?: I presume you want to know what is the cause?
We'd probably want to know if you had any recent dietary or medication changes, recent travel, recent encounters with patients. Does any particular food or food type seem to trigger this? Do you have nausea with this? Any recent surgeries?
You're describing symptoms that can be attributed to many things so may help if you can hone in your question. Thx

have ibs, bad periods even when on apri get really bad cramping where i pass out and bowel spasms, is there something better then apri that could help?

Diet changes: There are a couple of medications that I have used in my practice (not sure if they are available in canada). These are Linzess and amitiza (lubiprostone). However the corner stone treatment for most of my patients has been diet changes. I usually have them avoid processed foods and gluten for about 30 days. For about 99% of my patients these dietary changes relieve most if not all of their symptoms.

Irritable bowel: Sounds like irritable bowel or spastic colon.  Your doctor can prescribe medication for that like Bentyl (dicyclomine) to be taken before meals and at bedtime.

Cramping: Abdominal cramping with normal bowel movements, no vomiting or abdominal distension could be certain food intolerance(lactose,gluten), irritable bowel syndrome or some gas entrapment. Antispasmodic medications like dicyclomine should relieve cramps. Taking simethicone after meals prevents gas build up. If symptoms persist consult a gastroenterologist.

: Your symptoms are consistent with a hyperactive gastrocolic reflex. When food enters the stomach it sets in motion intestinal waves( peristalsis) throughout the small intestines&amp;colon. When this reflex is hyperactive urgent loose BM's occur regardless of what foods you ate. Irritable bowel syndrome can also do this but is more type of food or stress related. Antispasmodic medication helps both

Which foods?: Which foods are you noticing the cramps with? Keep a log and then try eliminating these foods one at a time to see if this is the culprit. You can get the child tested for gluten intolerance which is important to know about for growth purposes. Gluten intolerance can prevent correct absorption of nutrients and inhibit growth.

Fast food hurts gut: Fast food is notorious for being low in fiber & generally high in calories from concentrated sweets & fat.  Fats delay stomach emptying & promote reflux.  Dietary fats also promote release of cck & substance y which alters gut sensitivity, contracts the gallbladder, & prompts the "ileal brake" which in predisposed patients causes bloating & fullness. Choose instead salads, fruits, & whole grains.
