Genetic alterations: Some kids having the ASD or autism label have had very refined chromosomal mapping and assessments done. Many have small areas of redundant genetic material added or missing from otherwise normal appearing chromosomes. Families with more than one  symptomatic child seem to have this more frequently. This points to events that altered the genes in the egg prior to conception in some cases.

Yes: There is a complex polygenic predisposition .Single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in some cases(single gene mistakes). There are a number of specific genetic abn that have been associated with autism-that are identifiable. Most often it is complex and not specifically identifiable.

Weaning : Weaning any child from a bottle can be tricky.  Add autism into the mix and it's just become 10 times harder.  The problem is that she is going to have to take a cup eventually, so usually the sooner, the better.  Try to remember that it is your job to offer nutritious food and it's her job to eat it.  A child will not starve themselves if food is available.  The most important thing is to make sure she is staying hydrated.  Is she still urinating at least 3-4 times a day?  If so, you are in good shape and keep offering the cup.  If not, then you need to contact her doctor for another plan of action because it could be dangerous for her to become severely dehydrated. You can focus on academic pursuits, and reading people's feelings and learning to talk with them can be learned. Say only nice things, find a strength or endurance sport that requires little coordination, enjoy being you, and what's there to talk about?

No: Studies have shown that autism cuts across race, socio-econimc status, nationality, and most other measures.  Several large-scale studies are underway to look are specifics of maternal behaviors such as diet and exposures during pregnancy, but no results yet.  There is a clear genetic contribution, so those with a history of having had an autistic child are at increased risk.

how can i help my high functioning autistic sister. she is a 14 year old that isn't very social and my parents don't know how to help her.

There are social: Skills therapy groups for children with asperger's. They teach things like how to smile, make eye contact, proper body distance and talking with others. I know asperger's is an old term -but i think most of us recognize the meaning.
