Injury to the medial or lateral meniscus, frequently caused by a twisting or cutting motion, can cause sharp pain on knee flexion.  Partial or complete tear to the posterior cruciate ligament can also cause some knee pain, though it is usually accompanied by some swelling. Knee swelling: Knee swelling has nothing to do with the location of the pain.  The knee, like most joints, has a capsule that surrounds the joint and keep the fluid contained.  When there is an excess of fluid due to injury or inflammation, then the knee will swell.  You will usually notice the swelling either above (proximal) the knee or the lateral aspect as these are weaker/thinner areas of the capsule.
