I started giving my dear departed mother insulin injections daily beginning at age 8. Took some time to get used to but soon OK.
FYI, in those days we checked blood sugar levels in the urine and the different colors had no effect on the dose.
Not pleasant to do but turned out OK for me and Mum.

It depends: Actually giving the injections is not difficult, so quite young children can learn to do that and may enjoy that sense of control.  The harder part is monitoring eating habits and blood glucose, and that can be quite difficult for different reasons well into adolescence.  Still, usually, efforts are made to help the child take charge and responsibility in the early preteen years.

Uncontrolled despite: Currently we don't have the ability to cure diabetes short of a pancreas transplant. But, aggressive treatment/management plan such as wt loss (gastric bypass=very effective) to ideal wt can revert diabetes for years. When healthy lifestyles along with pills are not adequately controlling your sugar, then injectables/insulins are needed. Regular follow-up with doc is very important. Good luck.
