: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, why was insulin level tested? It is not a usual test. Rest of your results are normal. If you do not have any symptoms, do not be concerned.

fasting glucose=91 & 89 on 2 diff blood test, 2nd time tested insulin 3 hemoglobin a1c 5.4 i am constantly craving sugar, often become shaky & lightheaded, i'm 123 lbs 5'9" am i at risk for diabetes?

No but: Based on your numbers you are not diabetic or prediabetic. However if you consume a lot of sugar and simple carbohydrates and starch. You are at risk of hypoglycemia which seems to be what your symptoms indicate. I suggest eating more protein and more complex carbohydrates which are lower glycemic index and healthy fat like fish and plant-based that. Hopefully this will help get rid of the episodes.

Yes: As of 2010, we can use A1c to diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes.  2 positive tests are still needed but A1c of 5.7-6.4% is considered pre-diabetes,  A1c of 6.5% or above is diabetes.  5.6% or less is normal.

Yes: An 8.3% A1c gives you an average blood sugar of around 185 mmol/dl.  This is in the diabetes range, especially for a pregnant person.

Accepted Answer

Probably not...: Your body has an incredible ability to regulate blood sugar levels and when this ability is intact, excess carbs will be converted and stored as fat, thus should not raise your a1c. Once the ability is diseased, the excess carbs/sugar stay as sugar, thus higher blood sugar in diabetic, and will raise your a1c over time. Moderation is key. Live a well-balance life. Live long. Ask a diabetologist: You may want to repeat your hemoglobin A1C , or to request a 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test after a 75 gms glucose load or to discuss your concerns about diabetes and pre-diabetes with your doctor.  A consultation with a diabetes endocrinologist (or a center specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes) should provide the best answer to your questions.

No: If fasting for at least 8 hours
 fasting sugar 100-125 is pre-diabetes and 2-hrs after eating 140-199 is prediabetes.

Fasting -126 and higher
 and 2 hours after eating= 200 and greater is diabetes

can get home blood glucose testing  equipment over the counter in pharmacies.

Exercise: Your A1c is normal, albeit at the high end of normal. You can improve your insulin sensitivity by exercise, even though you are not overweight. Aerobic exercise, any exercise, will help.

Normal: All of those numbers are normal.  You do not have diabetes or any sign of pre-diabetes.

Diabetes: This a1c is not high enough to label you as being diabetic ( would have to be 6.5 or greater). The best way to see if some has diabetes is to do a 2hr glucose tolerance test.
